Arizona Sales Tax FAQs

What is Arizona’s “Transaction Privilege Tax” (TPT), and who actually pays it?

Arizona doesn’t have a traditional retail “sales tax.” TPT is a tax on the seller for the privilege of doing business in the state. Most sellers list it on the invoice and pass the cost to the buyer, but the seller remains liable to the state.

What’s the current Arizona state TPT rate?

The state portion is 5.6%. Your combined rate depends on city/county add-ons. Use the state’s rate table/lookup to get the exact rate for a delivery address.

Are groceries taxed in Arizona?

“Food for home consumption” is exempt from the state TPT, but some cities may tax it locally—check your city rate.

Are shipping charges taxable in Arizona?

Separately stated delivery from the retailer to the purchaser is not taxable. However, handling (or combined “shipping & handling”) is taxable, and only the actual delivery cost can be excluded.

Are services taxed?

Many services aren’t taxed under the retail classification, but other business classifications (e.g., lodging, contracting, amusements) are subject to TPT. Check your activity’s classification.

Are prescription drugs taxed?

Sales of prescription drugs are exempt from state and city TPT when sold by a pharmacy (reported and deducted on Schedule A).
